Cuando hay una acción, a veces hay una persona que recibe esta acción:
Doy un libro a Juan
´Juan´ is the receiver of the action, or the book in this case.
This is what we call ´the indirect object´ in grammatical terms.
Sometimes, we do not want to use the name, (in this case ´Juan´), because it is obvious who we mean, who is receiving the object or action. In these cases, we use a pronoun, a word that substitutes the name of the person.
You probably already know the indirect object pronouns in Spanish without even realising. Think of the verb ´gustar´. Do you remember this verb could be translated as ´to please´? If we think of it as meaning ´to please´ we can see that there is always someone who is the receiver of this action, of this pleasing:
me gusta el chocolate chocolate pleases me
te gusta el chocolate chocolate pleases you
le gusta el chocolate chocolate pleases him/her/formal you
nos gusta el chocolate chocolate pleases us
os gusta el chocolate chocolate pleases you (plural: more than one person)
les gusta el chocolate chocolate pleases them/plural formal you
These are the indirect object pronouns.
They are always introduced by the preposition ´a´, except when we use the pronouns (me, te, le, nos, os, les).
Ejemplo:
Doy un libro a Juan
Escribes una carta a mi hermano
This can helps us see who is the indirect object and use the correct pronoun to substitute the noun with the pronoun:
Le doy un libro
Le escribes una carta
Position:
In Spanish, they are placed before the verb, not after:
me gusta el chocolate chocolate pleases me
te doy un libro I give you a book
os explico la lección I explain the lesson to you
les envío una carta I send them a letter
But, if you are using an infinitive (-ar, -er, -ir) or a gerund (-ando, -iendo), you can either put the indirect object at the very front of the verbal expression or attached to the infinitive or gerund. This is the same thing that happens with the reflexive pronouns that we use with verbs like ´llamarse´ or ´levantarse´:
Te voy a dar un regalo o Voy a darte un regalo
Les estoy explicando la lección o Estoy explicándoles la lección
