1.3 Verbos irregulares en el pasado
a) Ser e ir
to be and to go
Being two of the most irregular verbs in any language, it won´t come as a surprise to learn that ´ser´ and ´ir´have an irregular past form, in fact changing their stem altogether. The interesting thing is that these two verbs share the past form so that you only need to learn one set of forms for both of them. Moreover, you have probably already seen and maybe even used the first person (yo): fui.

The verb ´estar´ has a very interesting past form: it contains the verb ´tener´ in the past:

Remember that ´tener´ only expresses the idea of possession. It is also used in the expressions ´tengo hambre´, ´tengo frío´, ´tengo miedo´, ´tengo calor´, ´tengo sed´.
´To have´, in the sense of eating or drinking, is ´tomar´: ayer tomé una cerveza.
d) 5 Verbos irregulares
All irregular verbs in the simple past tense in Spanish, except for ´ser/ir´, have two things in common:
- They have the stress on the penultimate syllable in the first and third person singular (yo and él/ella/usted)
- They have the same two irregular endings (1st and 2nd person singular, -e and -o, like above)
You can see how the stem changes on the last column. So if you take the verb ´decir´, for instance, you need to learn the new stem ´dij-´ and add the endings in bold. The endings are always the same as the ones for ´saber´.
You might be thinking that there are quite a few irregular changes of stem to learn but if you take one at a time and practice making lots of sentences with it before moving on to the next one, you will find it manageable and even easy to master.

My
childhood is a memory of a patio in Seville,
and
a bright orchard where the lemon trees grew tall;
my
youth, twenty years in the land of Castile ;
my
life story, some events I don’t wish to recall.
I
am no great ladies’ man like Mañara or Bradomín
-
everyone knows my rough and ready style of dress-
but
Cupid’s arrow found me none the less,
bringing
as much love as such things ever bring.
In
my veins there flow drops of Jacobin blood,
but
my verse spurts free from springs serene,
and,
rather than the average man who knows his creed,
I
am good in the way that good is supposed to mean.
I
worship beauty and in modern esthetics
I
pluck the old roses of the garden of Ronsard,
but
I don’t think much of modern-day cosmetics,
nor
am I one of those new happy-warbler bards.
I
despise the singers of vacuous chants
and
the chorus of crickets that chirp at the moon,
I
try to distinguish the real voices from the cant
and
of all the voices I listen but to one.
Am
I a classic or a romantic? I don’t know;
I
should like to leave my verse as the captain leaves his sword;
famous
for the hand with which it deals the blow,
and
not for its maker’s learned craft revered.
I
converse with the man who is always by my side

he who talks to himself hopes to talk to God later on -;
my
monologue is a chat with this good friend and guide
